Photographer's Note

Mission San Antonio de Padua near Jolon, California in Central California.

This is the third of California's historic Spanish Missions. It was founded July 14, 1771 by Father
Junipero Serra, which makes it very old by California standards.

This mission is unique amongst the chain in that its surroundings have not changed. With almost all of the other missions, urban areas and towns have grown up around the missions. Not so here, the surroundings of the mission remain rural.

When you drive up to it, you really feel like you've stepped back in time.

The mission is actually located on a large military base and this section of it remains undeveloped. The mission is nestled amongst the Santa Lucia mountains that lie to the east of the Pacific Ocean.

This mission does require effort to get to since it's really not on the way to any major sights. You can however continue driving through the base to get to the scenic Big Sur Coast.
