Photographer's Note

This is the third photo taken from Point Richmond of fog making its way into San Francisco Bay, this one taken due south. The fog has spread on the surface of the Bay to create what appears to be a blue-grey wall. The fog moves due east after it passes the Golden Gate then spreads north and south as it hits the East Bay hills.

This sailboat heading for a Richmond marina is passing through an industrial area. The barge that appears on the left belongs to a company that specializes in cleaning up oil spills on the bay and its tributaries. There is a Chevron-Texaco oil refinery immediately to the left on the shores of the Bay and small tankers regularly deliver oil that has been off-loaded from super tankers that are not permitted to enter the Bay. In fact there are many refineries along the shoreline of the Bay.

You will note that the crowd of passengers of this fairly large sailboat are all wearing jackets and long pants. While the temperature is lovely on the shore, the fog has created quite a chill on the water.

The Bay is a vital resource to the region, offering opportunities for recreation even as it serves commercial fishing and shipping interests. And, it is a prime contributor to the climate in the region.
