Photographer's Note

A few days ago a committee of the United Nations General Assembly approved a Moratorium on the use of the death penalty, as a first step to abolish the capital punishment around the world. 99 countries voted for the moratorium, including all the countries of the European Union. 52 countries voted against the moratorium. There were 33 abstentions.
Contradictorily, the proposed, brand new Treaty of the European Union allows for the possibility of death penalty in some cases. What an incongruence!
In the USA, 37 out of 50 states apply the capital punishment. One of those is California. This photo was taken during Earth Day 2006, in San Diego's Balboa Park. The organization of the Earth Day allowed for several kinds of protesters in the Earth Fair. One was this group of Amnisty International who were collecting signatures for a petition to demand "A California Moratorium [that] would call for a study of the current use of Capital Punishment".
I guess that not many people cared about it.
Portugal was the first European country that abolished the death sentence. The last execution was in 1846.
