Photographer's Note

On this day I was idling away some time in the Blue Mountains of Oregon, trying to photograph butterflies for Trek Nature. It was overcast early in the morning and there was little insect activity to record.

However, I did notice that some local citizens had developed a habit of discarding their empty beer cans in some of the most inappropriate places. I thought I might collect a few pictures to send in complaint to the breweries concerned.

Imagine my surprise a little later, then, when I passed a discarded can I had pictured earlier but noticed that it now had a resident of its own drinking from the river water splashed on its side.

The small orange-yellow butterfly is a Woodland Skipper Ochlodes sylvanoides. On reflection, however, I'd rather the discarded beer cans had not been there.

A collage created using Photoshop Elements 6 with images greatly resized and slightly sharpened for TE.
