Photographer's Note
If you have to be in the hospital, Scripps Green is the nicest hospital. Not only is it listed as one of the top US hospitals, but the staff are wonderfully considerate, the food isn't bad for a hospital and the view is equaled only by that at Maui Memorial Hospital. We look over the Torrey Pine's Golf Course at the para-sailors cruising off from the nearby glider port. There's a WS Photo
They've been watching these abnormal blood cells for 5 years. At first, observations came 3 months because they really looked like a problem. Time passes, no increased levels appear, the intervals widen to 6 months and then a year. In June they said, "A little increase but no other symptoms. Come back in 6 months."
Ugly bruises brought us back November 28. December 2, we were planning a Clipper ship sail in the Grenadines, I decide we we should know the labs before paying for the trip. The platelets were alarmingly low; more tests were needed.
The CT scan showed huge lymph nodes and spleen. The bone marrow tap came up dry; marrow has been replaced with lymphoma.
December 24, the news came; the indolent lymphoma had turned nasty - a mantle cell lymphoma. Still the oncologist we've trusted for five years mentions a 40% cure rate with a bone marrow transplant. We'll start chemo as soon as possible - December 29..
Alas, there weren't enough red or white blood cells. It's easy to give red blood cells(RBCs) but the resident is worried about the White Blood Cells, the infection fighters. He wants to wait until the regular doctor returns from vacation to consider chemo. I urge pressing on with the chemo saying there's no time to wait to grow white blood cells(WBCs).
December 30, chemo went smoothly but December 31, the fever flew past the 100.5 f trigger to 103 f (40 C) - off to the hospital. The fevers are gone but RBC levels refuse to rise as expected. The search is on for a cause. Happily no additional problems are found; Larry's doctor returns and projects calm assurance, "A corner has been turned. The next chemo will go better."
I'm grateful for the joy of the past five years. Each moment is precious. We've always known that all anyone has is right now. But now we plan for tomorrow, not next month. At the tomorrow promised for the past three days has arrived, we're going home!!

Hi Pat,
It is a stunningly beautiful scene .. the balance between the ordered and manicured .. and the wild infinity of f that sky .. the colors are surreal .. as your lives must feel right now ... but know we are all holding all of you in our thoughts.
I don't really know why but here is what came up on my random play as I was typing this from the Tannahill Weavers wonderful album Capernaum

Hi Pat,
At first, I was attracted by the dramatic sky and light, but found the note more important, of course. I am terrible at expressing concern and condolences, so I will just say I wish you both the best.
I am terrible at Hospitals. I won't go. I will finally however have to see a friend tomorrow, who had a motorcycle crash six weeks ago. Both legs broken, back broken, pelvis shattered, wrist broken, head injuries, a long rehab ahead. Then there is the addiction to painkillers wich is almost certain...It's a hard life.
Thanks for sharing this, Pat.

Hello Pat,
You captured a really fantastic scene with incredible lights on garden. Amazingly colored sky, long shadows of trees, splendid clarity and sharpness, but... I'm sorry for your notes. I can't find any words to describe my feelings to write here. I wish my best of best for both of you and our prays will be for you every time. Take care together.
I wish you and your family a healthy, prosperous and happy new year.

hi Pat,
in the world of such magic light good things and even miracles simply HAVE to happen, I wish you many of them for this and all the coming years.
it's one of those photos here it's difficult to write a meaningful comment. lights, colours, the long shadows over the grass, the feeling that this perfect moment goes on forever and that this landscape is endless - all those things together create an almost hypnotic image. I particularly like the strong perspective of the horizontal lines, it certainly adds a nice and soothing mood. superb work, my compliments.
wishing you all the best,

First of all I hope that Larry is doing much better now that your regular doctor has returned. Tell Larry that I said hello and get off his butt...

You already know Rob & I are backing Larry to the hilt with his fight. It's good you could share this with the TE community; a kind of catharsis. The view from the hospital is gorgeous and a salve for the eyes at least. The composition is superb. The diagonal from the paths is almost met with the diagonal from the clouds in the opposite direction. I love Larry's shot with his D700 too; you could say he is looking into the light, symbolically to get better.
Good to hear you can bring him home. Take care of him and yourself too.

Hi Pat,
Against the disease, it is necessary that the moral one holds good, I know that it is easy to say but I think it. I hope that there will be much sunset as that one because there is also the beauty of nature to help the moral one. Hello dear Pat! You know it still amazes me how close we get over the internet although I have only met a few people of this group and yet I think that I know some of you a little, and it feels like we have met in "real" life although we have not. So this all touches me and I guess this website would be without meaning for me if it wouldn't. I had given up a long time ago if this was the case. Hi, Pat -
Very moving note. I have a couple of relatives right now fighting cancer, so I have some small idea of what you're going through. I wish you and Larry lots of luck and hope; there are a lot of new advances in the field from even a few years ago.

Hi Pat!
so I discover such bad news through such a beautiful view!!
I am sure that doctors will be clever in managing this situation, I must see you again in Oregon, do you remember? We are also planning day by day and not for months ... Time is going on and health can change, but we are fighters and we go on!
I see that hospital window shows a beautiful landscape! This is great, and your picture is fantastic. Sky is gorgeous. I couldn't guess that an hospital would have such a view!

Hello Patricia,
I saw this one standing on the edge of 100, so why not give it that extra push to make it in to the 100 series. But not without saying that this one really deserves it. Not only on the composition, but more on the light....how i love this light. Seeing it from a hospital is perhaps not the best way to see it, but it sure looks great....a real WOW sky..!!!

Hi, Pat,
There are many very good photos in your gallery.
Then, there are shots (and not just a few) like these.
Wow!
The vitality of this image jumps off my computer screen.
Oddly, though, when I think about the process of dissecting the image to critique it, many of the elements are not _so_ special. Green grass, a sprinkling of trees, and yes, a beautiful sky.
I think that this is one of those shots that has to be seen as a whole entity. The quality of light is extraordinary and you've captured it spectacularly. I like also your choice of perspective, placing the brightness just at the edge of the frame. The sun is clearly a part of the story, but the wonderful colors it produces in the sky and on the grass are put front and center as the featured stars.
Best wishes and warm regards,
- William
