The Cheerleader, a photo from Oregon, West

Photographer's Note

A local rafting outfit takes thrill seekers down Big Eddy rapids, a steep section of the Deschutes River than is nearly a mile long. This little girl had joined her grandfather, who was the official photographer for the rafting company. As the raft came into view, she unknowingly leaped into my frame take pretend photographs but her enthusiasm overwhelmed her and she burst into a cheerleader role.
This section of the Deschutes River is about 10 miles south of Bend, just below Dillon Falls. The earlier rafting picture was taken just south of Maupin which is about 100 road miles north of Bend.
The may have been the last run of the year, the next day it turned quite cold and a few days later it snowed about 8/17 cm

Well done Pat. You caught four of the five rafters with a look of joy. I'm sure the fifth guy is elated too. Well composed with the inclusion of the cheerleader.

Hi Pat,
The black silhouette of the girl who invades unconsciously your framing has created an interesting contrast with such a dynamic image of the raft jumping on the foam of the water, in a scene full of action, very well caught in this spontaneous and well-executed capture.

Curious feeling here, impression to see a person rising and showing her enthusiasm at the time of a film to the cinema !!! Beautiful photograph on this raft in full action, a very good clearness of the image and I like much the dynamism as well participants as cheerleader The colors and the lights are pleasant. This is a fantastic action shot. The expressions on the rafters' faces and the churning water says it all. Your shutter speed was obviously fast to freeze the motion so well. The 'cheer-leader' is a great addition and helps to make us feel part of the scene.

This is superb....the person in the FG in silhouette makes it surreal, makes us part of the scene...adrenaline pumping action in the BG, the raft skimming the surface of the waters...the guys pumping up the oars...superb! Sharpness is excellent here, not a shade overdone and spot on.

the silhouette of the girl is what makes the photo so fascinating and fun as far as I'm concerned, this could work really well as and add for adventures, especially seeing the happy faces of the people in the raft :) great timing, and great "accidental" addition :)

Your dynamic shot adds more adrenalin than rafting itself. In addition, this beautiful and very expressive silhouette in the foreground adds a new word in photographic compositional scheme. Very clever idea and its realization!

A funny composition was just happening hahaha!
Do you know what is the funniest squirrel image I ever saw was? Not the one in the news recently (which I'm pretty sure was a fake) no, but one with half a blurry fur coat with hind legs in the frame as the quick animal jumped just as the guy pushed the button! I have tried to repeat that one but it is very very difficult...
Here you freeze the action at the right moment, and the girl is a fine element!

Hi Pat,
From this POV, it's like you are so close to the raft, it coming at you and know you down along the way, so watch out. Amazing how you get the cheerleader in there too, it almost like a person standing up in front of you in the middle of the movie in a theatre. So much details, every drop of the splashing water is accounted for and excellent moment with great sharpness, considering your subject was moving so much. Excellent job Pat.

Hi Pat, An exciting shot. There is almost motion in the picture as the waves swirl aroung the raft. Deschutes is a beautiful river. My son has caught many steelhead in that river fishing with flies. That river and the Rogue are great places for river rafting. Roger

Hi Pat,

I do not mind the silhouette of girl in the right corner at all, it actually adds tremendous DOF to your crips sharp action shot. Due to the girl the viewer feels to be part of the action himself. From time to time a mistake turns out to be a blessing in disguise, as in this case. You selected a very good spot, from where you could take photographs with the sun in your back. Good photo job.
