There's an old mantra in landscape photography, "f/8 and be there". To me it has always meant that you need to be in the right place, and make good technical decisions, to get the shot.

Because our work in the White River National Forest spanned several weeks, the small Hornsliver campground, near the town of Minturn, often served as our weekend base camp.

It is a small campground very near the highway, surrounded by hills and forest, but not the type of location that I felt had many possibilities for photos.

However, one morning I got out of my tent as usual and was amazed to see some absolutely sublime light over the hills. There wasn't much time to prepare, so I grabbed my camera, set the aperture to f/8 and found a good composition.

The result was a shot that I am very satisfied with, but never would have imagined taking if I hadn't spent weekend after weekend in this little campground in order to see that one magical moment.

"F/8 and be there." Sometimes that's all there is to it.
