Contrasts in the USA
The United States of America has many faces and many contrast. How could it be else in such a big country.
Philadelphia - South 7th street
Walking in Philadelphia from Washington Square to the City Hall we went through the S 7th Street where I took this picture. You can see the backside of the building in the Sansomstreet on the left side and the Franklin Residences in the S 9th Street. On the right side of this alley are the backsides of the building in the Chestnutstreet.
The fire-escapes and the garbage containers dominates this kind of street, the pavement is bad, but you must realize that it is just the backyard of the buildings. The street had no name and is used for escape routes and garbage collection.
But the contrast with the streets it connects is enormous.
In the WORKSHOP you can see almost the same scene in a window-shop reflection/selfie. Direction 180° from main picture.

Hello Rob,
It is often a good idea to get away from the main streets in a city and see what's going on behind the façade as you clearly show us here. A very interesting urban landscape with lots to see. Excellent technical realisation.

Hello Rob,
We have been taught now what a deeply divided country the US is, but in this photo it's not easy to detect any voting patterns. Maybe the new official US policy of white supremacy and hate speech could be represented in the tall building, who knows? It's a good photo anyway, showing well the physical contrasts of many big cities, actually not just in the US. As for unpleasant political surprises next year's Dutch elections could bring another shock (and absolutely the 2018 elections in Sweden).
Kind regards,
Gert

Hallo Rob,

The streets of Philadelphia...
There's always tomorrow.
Cheers
Benny
PS: Er is iets fout gegaan met een bold-instructie, lijkt me.

Bonjour, cher Rob ,

Hello Rob,
I would add to your note by saying, that very recently the ITT institute of technical-schools that is shown on the WS, which was subsidize by the government - declared bankruptcy, as funds were stopped abruptly.
America is in contrast with itself. America is not NYC or Las-Vegs, it also town like Phili, Baton-Ruoge, Detroit and many more rural small towns that left on the sidelines.
Very sad, hope there will be a solution soon. That's what I see in your picture, which is a fine and accurate description.
My best regards,
Ike

Hi Rob,absolutely amazing, this is a masterwork! A great way to do a fantastic pic from this poor street,i like the colors, close to a brown monochrome, and the different persepective levels with tht DOF on the left part! Nice WS too with you reflected in the glass! Have a nice evening and thanks,Luciano

Hi Rob,
The length of the small street is giving depth to the scene. The popint of view is shoing the details of the fire escape stairs. There is a good contrast between the colours of the pcture. Have a nice day.

Hi rob,
ike your pic. When i look a the street and the miserable condition it is, it could also be in a third world country!

Hell Rob,
The details of this back street are stark: there is no show, just the bins, the unrepaired street, the graffiti and the many fire escapes. Some are necessary details of city life! Tall buildings need escape routes! Apartments have no backyards for bins! But your photograph graphically displays the differences between city and country residences!
As a 'country girl', I find the close, towering blocks almost claustrophobic. Though I love to explore them and see the photographs, I would definitely not like to live there!
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Rob, Such contrasts one can find probably in most big cities. Nice facades but in the backstreet the area that probably it would be better not to enter. Amazing all these pipes, chains and fire escapes. But I wonder what they do in case of fire - the last platform is quite high, too high for jumping. Strange this one leg and one arm.

Dear Rob,
Very interesting composition with this not so appealing street in the foreground. Inequality was also present in the past and now is on the rise now in many countries. Including mine.
Have a nice weekend!

Hi Rob
yeah, you have to be careful at times i guess, not sure if walking around here at midnight it such a great idea.
i ran into some trouble in San Fran late at night near City Hall, thats what happens when you're walking the streets and you get lost.
the contrasts between this one and most of your NYC shots is great, its good to shake it up a bit sometimes.
love the gritty feel of this one.
cheers

Hello Rob,
Indeed, the US is a country of contrasts, wealth and poverty exist side by side. Nice view of this back alley showing one of those contrasts.

Hello Rob
I really enjoy backstreet shots like this and the contrast it offers. Lots of details and fine effect of the many fire-escapes. The inclusion of the people adds life and scale to the scene. Very nice work:) TFS.
