Photographer's Note
This is the northeast area of the Great Salt Lake salt flats. The lake itself is to the right of this photo (west) by several miles. On some maps, it says these are "mud flats", and they are that when wet. These flats are composed of salt, mud and other minerals.
The Bonneville Raceway, where land speed records are made, is exactly opposite this area; it is on the eastern side of the lake, and is a good four or five hours drive from here. There, the salt is much more pure and thick, and so makes for good racing.
The post seen here is a piling from the old railway system that was built here in 1905. This wooden rail system has since been replaced by a boulder and gravel causeway that is more practical, but not nearly as visually exciting.
The rocks in the distance are just that: a pile of rocks. I hope to hike over to them this fall.
The clouds are just that: clouds, but it is beginning to rain, and so you can see the curtain of rain beginning to fall--and perhaps evaporate before reaching the ground.
Thanks for looking!

Nice shot David !
Splendid mix of gray, blue and green colors.
We can imagine hell on the foreground and eden on the island in the background.
Nice work, I love your pictures !

Hi David,
This really is an unusual and interesting image...the floating dust or mist in the background adding a real mystical feeling.I noticed you used a tripod (late in the day?) and also flash )please explain.Very good work...well done.

A balanced composition to illustrate this barren, yet richly-textured scenery, David. Good use of the foreground trunk to anchor the frame, and good contrast as the eye wanders towards the back where the layer of haze adds a slightly mysterious aspect. Good shot, as usual.

J'adore les teintes de ton image, vraiment sympa comme tu as capturé cet endroit, et le cadrage est sympa aussi. Je trouve le côté épuré vraiment intéressant ici, ca donne une ambiance étrange.

Wooow. It's hard to believe that this picture is a colour one. Only after a second and third look I can see some traces of colors. The white plain and the dusty sky are so dramatic, and I am really glad that you included the trunk in an excellent psition.
I wonder what kind of PP you have used here?
Wonderful, strong and excellent image, well done, David.

Hi David. Really stunning this shot! I like the compo and the POV, that creates a big space toward to background. I like too the desaturated colours, it seems a world in gray tones, except for the intense blue bottom. Very nice! Thanks!

David,
I like your shot..Since I love minimum composition.
You really pulled out the shot verywell placing the two objects at exact location..where it shoud be!!
I really can see the distance in this shot.
Clouds on background adding the mood.
But...I would prefer to have B/W look here..that really will make crack.
How do you feel?
Well done.
keep it up.

Very good minimalist image. The fill flash has given the photo an extra unexpected quality difficult to define. It's not something I ever use, but I really must experiment more. The sky is very unusual - maybe dust?

Serwus David !
What a stylish Work this is. Out of this world, i would say. Absolutely amazing piece of dry and abandoned land. I especially like the classical use of the strong element in the forground and the way it echoes the distant rocks. Nicely chosen proportion for emphasizing the vast territory with a well contrasted heavy skies with pouring rain.
In fact, i'm absolutely impressed.
My deep respect.
Be well,

Hi David. I like very much the surreal look here. The bright sand conrast so sharply to the sky. This would also work well as a b/w and I'm a little surprised you didn't go that route. Super work David!

Fantastic sky here, David, that's what gives this so much drama. (And in your case, drama should be what you're trying to convey, right?) The foreground has great texture and the stump looks almost frosty. It may be a wasteland in some terms, but it has its own beauty, in your hands. Regards, Ken.

Hello David,
Your images are always at least for a class better than any other, here on TE!
I tend to think there's some serious PP-ing done here as these beautiful colours are just hard to except to be earthy - which they are (of course!) and this is one of the main quality, IMHO of this composition - pale washed-out colours and some really smashing light!
Hazy and dramatic act near the horizon gives a great touch to this peaceful and otherwise very serene scene.
Pure art and I therefore congratulate you!

Hi David,
Outstanding capture of this remarkable scene. Ludovic's comment about hell versus Eden is most apropos. One imagines a thirsty, weary traveller trying to walk the last distance to the oasis in the distance...The rising clouds appear to the viewer as some dust storm and we learn from your note that we are not walking toward Eden at all, but just a pile of rocks. But the illusion is there. The post is well placed and the sharpness level just right. An impeccable capture, David. The unusual tones and hues here are quite remarkable, with the small slice of blue sky adding that extra zip and dash of colour needed. Great work.

Dear David,
You have illustrated well your title; this does appear to be a wasteland. I do like like the advancing rain squall moving on the horizon. I knew Salt Like was BIG but a 4-5 hour drive to get to the otherside is REALLy big.

Hello David.
As Ludovic says this is such a great mix of colours, on a photo full of contrasts. The sky is great, the thin horizon line goes very well on this one and the placement of this wood piece on the image gives it a very interesting point, full of nice patterns.

Hi again David, another breathtaking image. Once again, a simple but superb composition and a wonderful texture. Clever use of flash to bring out the characteristics of the wood and beautifully balanced. The quality of the blue in the sky is something else (as taken or with some very sympathetic treatment in post-processing?). I can't fault the photograph and another favourite of mine. Stephen

Hello David
I recognize here your trademark,in this simple composition,of empty and mysterious place, with an object of interest in the foreground as an intro. to the vast empty place that is the dry lake.
The rainy clouds adds a good mood and are giving a good contrast to the background.

Good study of how to use few details, a simple compo to achieve interesting photographic results in a presentation. i guess the focus on the old root and the background mist is what does it. Good work as you so often present.
