Photographer's Note

Dizzy's is a music venue, in the San Diego Gaslamp Quarter, that features primarily jazz. The image was taken at a Tribute to the music of Duke Ellington. Gilbert is one of the most active local trumpet players. While I have seen Gilbert play with many different musicians, he is always listed as the leader of the group. The particular group for this event was from Los Angeles, and were discussing an upcoming event at "Yoshi's", in Oakland, California, considered by many to be the premier jazz venue on the West Coast.

Dizzy's, is owned by Chuck Perrin, who says "I'm a guitar player and songwriter, and it's always been my vision to have the spontaneity and improvisation of jazz thrust in with folk music, but there was no longer a place to do that kind of stuff. The only way was to find a place and set it up so people could perform."Dizzy's motto is "Where the Music Matters Most." Many of the musicians I see play here express great appreciation for the venue that Chuck Perrin provides.

Dizzy's is in an old building, that, before the "revitalization" of the Gaslamp, used to be home to a session known as "The East Village Jazz Jam." The Jazz Jam was rumored to have been quite lavish with drink, however, Dizzy's is alchol free and open to all ages.
