Photographer's Note

I heard this critter before I saw him. He was sunning on the edge of a platform floating in San Francisco Bay and moaning his pleasure every time he leaned back to catch a few extra rays. I approached as quietly as I could, taking shots as I got closer. Suddenly he grunted and lifted his head. He'd heard me as I approached and began searching the concrete bulkhead for what to him was surely an unwelcome intruder on his pleasure. I took a few steps backward so I was no longer in view and went on my way. It was only later in the day when I described the scene that my friend said, "There's your untamed animal in its natural habitat." Boy was I not thinking about the Scavenger Hunt when I captured this image, but of course she was right. Seals share the bay with the rest of us humans, but I've never seen one in a hurry to get anywhere. I sort of like that pose myself. Sunbathing anyone? .-)
