My feelings and thoughts about this piece are somewhat complicated. Firstly, I must explain about why I shot this. I have a deep fascination for graveyards. I have been actively exploring them photographically for several years now. I generally prefer run down ones for my subjects. To me cemeteries seem to be our last ditch effort to make some lasting mark on this material plane. It is a way for both ourselves and those who remain behind to attempt to create a small piece of PHYSICAL immortality in this existence. Under normal circumstances, this cemetery would have been too new for my tastes. However, this is the grave of my grandmother whom died about 10 years ago. While on vacation with my wife and parents in Colorado, I asked to be shown this monument so that I could photograph it. I did not think I would get any viable shots, but it was important to go through the process. AT some point some leave and garbage had accumulated at the base of the grave stone. My mom went to clean it up and in the process broke down into tears. I grabbed the shot and then went to comfort her. Fortunately, the shot came out. Human moments like these are rare. This is all made more precious, because a few days later my grandfather died and we buried him in this same grave.

Technical notes: This was shot with my favorite toy camera, developed in Diafine, scanned, and then tritoned in PS. Yes I did get permission to use this shot.
