Back to current times and a visit to the highest areas in Australia, the Snowy Mountains and Kosciuszko National Park.
I'm starting right at the top with a photo of Mt Kosciuszko which at just 2,228 metres is Australia's highest. It isn't very spectacular sitting there but at least there is the last of winter's snow. You can get to it by catching a chairlift from Thredbo and then a 4-5 hours return walk mostly on a raised metal path to protect the fragile environment. That makes it the easiest highest mountain of any continent to "climb". In the large version you can clearly see people on the summit.
And the name of the mountain? Especially for our Polish TE friends it was named by the Polish explorer Pawel Edmund Strzelecki in 1840, in honour of Polish-Lithuanian freedom fighter General Tadeusz Kościuszko, because of its perceived resemblance to the Kościuszko Mound in Kraków, Poland (thanks Wikipedia). For a long time they left the z out of its name but that was corrected a few years ago. Strzelecki is not forgotten in Australia - he has a desert and a track (for crossing the desert) in South Australia, a lookout in NSW and a locality and mountain range in Victoria all named after him.
I've been to the top in the past but I'm not as fit as I was so just walked to where you can see Kosciuszko.
In the workshop is a wider view of Kosciuszko and a neighbour showing the path to the mountain.

Hello Ian
I never expected to see any snow on Kosciuszko in November. Usually it's all gone by late August in Qld and that's even if any snow manages to fall at all in the winter months. Stanthorpe and the Granite Belt/ Girraween are an extension of the New England Tableland, another cold area of NSW.

Hi Ian,
Nice landscape with this hill, good frame and composition with the view of the detail of the trail and these tiny silhouettes of hikers. Pleasant sun light and contrast with snow, tfs.

Bonjour, cher Ian,

Hello Ian, Thank you for this gift to the Polish Trekkers. Shame, but I didn't see it when I was in Australia. It doesn't look difficult to climb in this picture. I think I would be able to go. I see the tourists on the left side. It is quite high with 2228 metres, a bit lower than our Rysy. 4-5 hours return walk - also not so bad.
Kosciuszko was also an American hero.
have a nice weekend

Hello Ian,
This is slightly higher than the highest mountain in Sweden, but it looks like anyone reasonably fit and with good shoes could climb it relatively easily. The patches of snow make the view eye-catching, and the road where we see some trekkers is an interesting feature. For that reason I have a slight preference for the WS, where the road and the persons play a greater role.
Best regards,
Gert

Hi Ian,
I don't think I've seen a view of this peak before. With those gentle round forms it's not as impressive as many others. But as the highest of the continent it is remarkable of course. And obviously a popular place for Sunday climbers.

Hello Ian,
The difference in quality between this and the large image is incredible. In the large version, we can see the figures attempting the climb, in the f/g and those already at the summit, plus the textures are almost palpable!!
A fine introduction to Australian snow!!!
Have a good w/e,
Bev :-)

Hi Ian,
The presence of the persons has an effect of scale. The point of view is showing the details of Mount Kosciuszko with a bit of snow. It is the season for Canada to get snow. I saw on TV that Australia is getting very high temperature. Have a nice day.

Hi Ian
Great lead in with the tiny 'climbers' give huge sense of scale and the feeling there's a long way to go to get to the snow field. Excellent capture true to life, it looks warm and lovely overall contrast and your write-up adds much to one's appreciation. Excellent effort and tfs

Hello Ian,
A very nice view of the gentle slopes around the top of the mountain. I like the combination of green areas and the snow. Also the pattern created by the many rocks is attractive.

Hi Ian,
it is quite an extraordinary, to hear this Polish name in the context of the highest mountain so far away from Poland. Even though I knew about it of course, every time I am amazed by that fact.
This is a fantastic reportage from the hike. Presence of people so tiny here makes us to better appreciate the scale.
And snow in Australia is again something interesting to imagine.
Excellent work,
M

Hello Ian,
Snow in Australia is unknown to many here at home. Also a mountain with a Polish name. I've heard of it before but did not know who it was named after.
Splendid picture in the WS.
At first sight it looks like a mountain where you can hike to the top instead of climbing. But I may be mistaken.
Best regards, Paul

Hi Ian,
It's not exactly Mt Everest, but at least there is some snow here. And it is good to be able to say you've climbed the highest peak on a continent. Mt Kosciuszko looks more impressive from the west, where its flanks drop down steeply. I have read that Strzelecki was in fact referring to nearby Mt Townsend, which he thought was the highest peak, and which has a more pyramidal shape similar to the Kosciuszko Mound in Poland. But Mt Townshend turned out to be a bit lower than Mt Kosciuszko, so that name was given to the highest peak. A well lit and sharp photo, with the rocks thrown into sharp relief.
