Meet Sid the emu. He came up to say gidday to me at the Cairns Zoo. Emus are usually quite friendly and very curious. They are uniquely native to Australia and have played an important part in Aboriginal culture, food and traditions. One of the largest star constellations in the Southern Hemisphere was named by Aboriginal astronomers and forms the shape of an emu.

My first memory of emus was when I was very little and visiting Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve in Canberra. They were everywhere and wanted to join our picnic. They succeeded.

A fine capture of this cute little chap. His blue-black plumage stands out beautifully against the warm-toned background. I always make a beeline for the giraffes when I go to the zoo, very graceful creatures.

Quite an angry looking chap your friend here. If Emus are the same tiny brained birds as there cousins in South Africa, there is not much going on there. I remember having ridden on the back of an ostrich while working in South Africa, quite a sight I must have been ...

Sid the Emu giving me the stare...
This beautiful closed up work has real personality with detail and good use of DOF, sharp as pin but why this Beauty of a Beast isn't smiling? probably getting annoyed at the photographer! I think he is really cute, he's giving you the eye but a bad hair day, perhaps he really should change his hairdresser and i wonder too what brand of mascara he uses, lots of length, lift and separation,, he...he.

Good portrait of one of Australias most iconic animals hope the lens survived the inevitable pecking? Great lens work, Congrats and tfs

Well, Hi Sid, I do love your big brown eyes and your cute hairdo!

A lovely "full frontal" portrait of this intriguing and rather attractive bird even if he does look just a tad dejected and sorrowful with those great big eyes.

You have captured your friend here perfectly against a nicely non-distracting and out of focus background, showing off his lovely blue plumage to good effect. Your focus on those eyes is spot-on and the general details and sharpness in his endearing face are brilliant.

i have to say, i'm a little disappointed!!!!
I was SOOOO looking forward to hearing some funny story about you being attacked lol
or perhaps your husband lol
all in good taste and fun though of course :)

Two things stand out...first, the title - love the title. and your first sentence - Meet Sid the emu.
something funny and cute about that.

I guess this is the face only a mother could love right? pretty intense stare, especially with that huge grin he's got going on, he's up to no good for sure!
