Redruth Gaol, a photo from South Australia, West

Photographer's Note

This is the courtyard and solitary cell in Redruth Gaol, situated on the outskirts of Burra in the Mid North of South Australia. It's hot and desolate, and would have been a somewhat unpleasant way to spend time. The lone tree was probably planted long after the prison closed.

The Gaol was built in 1856, and was the first South Australian Gaol built outside of Adelaide. The prison closed in 1894, and re-opened in 1897 as a Girl's Reformatory, closing in 1922.

It again came to fame when in 1979 part of the film "Breaker Morant" was shot within the walls.

Some adjustments in Photoshop to the Levels, and some sharpening, otherwise it's as I saw it.

Hi David! Welcome back!
Nice photo this one. I like this old tree and the shadow of the branches.The old building behind it seems a little misterious. Colours are also very good!

Great shot! I like the framing with the tree and the old building is lovely. Colours are great too, very Australian Definately would not have been a pleasant place to be for any length of time. :-) Cheers Tina

I like all various colours in this shot - the bits of sky, the new growth on the tree, the earth. I reckon it's well put together, too.

Love how that cell is like a black hole .. but It is that lone tree .. and especially the shadow of that tree that makes this a special picture to me .. wonderful & thoughtful image.

Nice shot David.
I like the light, looks like a still from a Stella Artois advert or a still from The Godfather. Very traditional and more like Italy, Spain not Australia.
Well composed image, beautifully coloured and lit.
Well seen and captured.

Hello David,
Simple but very interesting composition with this tree and the surrounding walls. The shadows cast by the branches are fascinating and the colours beautifully warm. Very good textures and lighting.
