Photographer's Note

Greetings and best wishes to all Trekkers from here in the sun.

This photo shows a very grand and elegant Victorian building, the North Melbourne Town Hall. Built in 1876, it served as the community's town hall for many years until its operations were taken over by the Melbourne City Council, and the building was turned into an Arts House and Theatre. I live only a few hundred metres from this spot, and pass by it nearly every day. The photo looks south along Errol Street, where I took this shot of Yesterday's Heroes at the Town Hall Hotel, on the opposite side of the street. The number 57 Tram, which I call the 'United Nations Tram', is just rounding the corner into Queensberry Street on its way to the suburb of West Maribyrnong.

Even in the last few days before Christmas, I was happy to be living in a part of Melbourne very close to the centre of the city, but where a relatively quiet atmosphere prevailed, far from the shopping orgy taking place in the malls in the suburbs. So materialist has Christmas become that some large shopping chains declared that the Boxing Day Sales which usually begin early in the morning of the 26th of December would start on Christmas Eve! "Why should people have to wait until Boxing Day?" was the justification given. Fortunately, Errol Street will remain a tranquil zone, like some out of place country town.
