Rangitoto Island in Hauraki Gulf as seen from Gould Reserve in Takapuna on Auckland's North Shore.

Rangitoto is the youngest of the 47 islands in the Hauraki Gulf and emerged from the sea around 700 years ago in a series of volcanic explosions. It is now extinct. It is a circular island which presents the same uniform appearance from many suburbs of Auckland. It's summit is 260 metres high and the island is connected to Motutapu Island by a causeway. It is an icon of Auckland city.
