Photographer's Note
This was taken on Lihir Island before it became a large gold mine. I was on the early geological team exploring the island in 1985. Before I left to work on the nearby islands of Simberi and Tatua, the locals had a festival and I was invited. The locals dressed up, sang and danced. Large numbers of pigs were killed and cooked on open fires. In one of the moments I still remember with dread, I was given a large plate full of raw, bloody pig meat by the village chief.
PNG was an interesting experience. I returned there last year for a few months to explore for gold in the Bismark Sea using a remote submersible and have photos of unusual animals at 2.5kms depth.
