(Series on my Trip to SALVADOR - The Capital City of the State of Bahia - The Northeastern Region of Brazil - My Country's First Capital City - from November 20th to November 23rd 2008 - #004 !)

PALÁCIO RIO BRANCO - RIO BRANCO PALACE (White River Palace) - It was the Seat of the Brazilian First Government. It's in the "CIDADE ALTA" (Upper City), right beside the entrance of the "Elevador Lacerda" (Lacerda Elevator/Lift), at the "PRAÇA TOMÉ DE SOUSA" (Tomé de Sousa Square).

"Fodor's Review:
The building dates to 1549, when it was the headquarters of the colonial government of Brazil. The current construction, completed in 1919, is the result of several renovations and expansions and has resulted in an eclectic style that leans toward neoclassical. Today it houses Salvador's Chamber of Commerce, the Cultural Foundation of the State of Bahia, and the state tourist office. On the first floor there's a small memorial to the State's Governors, depicting the last two centuries of local history. Get a great view of "Cidade Baixa" (Lower City) and the bay from the east balcony."
