Photographer's Note
‘Bogotá - The real thing !’
I admit that the quality of this picture isn’t satisfying at all. There was little light and I found nothing to put my camera on. But … in this case it’s the note that is important.
On my last evening in Colombia, I walked through the streets of the Chapinero district in Bogotá and suddenly I saw this food stall across the street.
First, my attention was drawn to the large letters ‘PAPAS BELGAS’ (Belgian potatoes) and the black-yellow-red colours.
Due to the Americans the whole wide world uses the term 'french fries'.
But the French and also the Dutch do know very well that the real origin of fried potatoes is their little neighbour where the world's best beer is brewed and where the most delicious chocolate on earth is made.
You will therefore understand my surprise that in a country far away I found such a ready and clear reference to Belgium.
Of course I had to try the fries of that food stall and they were excellent!
On my question why the text "Papas Belgas" was used, one of the employees replied that his boss and owner of the business had decided that the residents of Bogotá had to get to know THE REAL THING.
The fries were even sold in point bags which used to be the tradition in Belgium (but unfortunately enough, this habit goes into disuse).
What a pleasant moment to be far away from home and to meet people who do know the really important things in life !
My night could not be better.
PS: Any suspicions of chauvinistic feelings are completely irrelevant.

Salut Paul,

Mooie avondfoto.

Hello Paul,
Such cases - the outcome is not the main issue, and we all know that night shots can be a bit blured. The story is more importent, and the TE mission par-excellence.
Anyway, it tells something about night-out "thing" in Bogota.
Have a nice new day,
Ike

Hello Paul, I like your lovely note. I tried the Papas Belgas when I was in Belgium, they were delicious but with mayonnaise?? as to the world's best beer I can't tell, I do not drink any. I like chocolate but in Poland the Swiss one is more popular. But one can buy these Guylian sea shells. I like them.
In fact, potatoes and also chocolate are native from South America. I tried "real" chocolate in Mexico but it was not so good. I prefer milk one.
Nice picture. The quality is good enough. and the feelings are more important.
Kind regrad s Malgo

Dag Paul,
Bedankt.
Groeten uit een onweerachtig Vlaanderen,
John

Hello Paul,
Wherever the pommes frites are made, they come with too many carbohydrates and too much fat. Not my favourite kind of food, Belgian or what else. But this little street stall with its light and colours creates a quite cosy atmosphere, so it's a pleasant photo and that is more important to TE. And I applaud anyone who resists US fast food imperialism. ;-)
Best regards,
Gert

Salut Paul,
I'm sure it wasn't intentional but the rooftop sculpture resembles a giant shuttlecock from a badminton game! Good color and sharpness. I like the warm cold color contrasts. Tfs.

In Poland you can find a few restaurants and street stalls where Belgian fries are sold, people eat fries and dont think about their origin, the globalization is total, very nice atmosphere in your photo

Bonjour Paul

Groet Rob

Hi Paul,
I thought I have already commented under this photo.
I remember when France criticized US for starting the war in Iraq, in the American Congress cafeteria they renamed French fries to Freedom fries.
Either way in UK they arecalled chips, the word which we in Poland use for something what in UK is called crisps.
Very confusing.
I didnt have a chance to try Belgian version.
Although you are not very happy with the quality you have managed to capture a nice evening mood.
Very well done,
M
