Photographer's Note

Sometimes the minutes leading up to the sunset are just as beautiful as the sunset itself.

That was the case this past Sunday. I was enjoying the afternoon at a cousin's condominium in Michigan City on the southern shores of Lake Michigan. This was taken from his balcony. Believe it or not, the beach was full of sunbathers and the lake was full of boats. After the sun finally disappeared over the horizon, over 40,000 people shared the spectacle of the summer festival fireworks over the lake.

This photo is one of my favorites from the dozens I took because of the seagull, the position of the sun, and the fact that I was able to capture just the one solitary sailboat, even though there were thirty more in the area. I only wish the sailboat had been a bit closer to better view it.

I used Flickr to clip out this piece, to soften the coloring temperature just a bit toward blue, and to sharpen the image.
