The Sabz Burj is a small tomb dating from the early Mughal era - let us say circa 1530 CE. It is located at the junction of Lodi and Mathura Roads in Delhi. Who is buried here is unknown. There are eight small chambers surrounding an octagonal central tomb and above the dome. One takes life and limbs in hand to cross the road to reach the property. It is octagonal in shape. The tiles on the dome were originally green in colour, but ASI had some blue ones in stock, so blue is what you see. What is really important about the tomb is that it possesses a double dome - an important step forward in Mughal architecture. This led to a sequence of such structures - Humayun's tomb (just a bit to the northeast), the tomb of Khan-i-Khanan (across the road to the east) and then a century later, the Taj Mahal itself. The point of a double dome is this: the external dome can take a shape appropriate to the exterior design while, in similar fashion, the internal dome can be formed to create the desired interior. In between is nothing so the total dome is lighter in weight.
