Photographer's Note

Living in a city with the most woeful public transport, I was really impressed with the Luas light railway system in Dublin. We stayed in a hotel out at The Point and quite a way from the city centre but the wonderful Luas stopped right outside and it was an easy, cheap and clean way to get about. I took this shot at ‘our’ stop on a glorious Dublin morning.

Luas (speed) is a tram or light rail system serving Dublin, the first such system in the decades since the closure of the last of the Dublin tramways. In 2012, the system carried 29.4 million passengers, up from 29.06 million passengers in 2011. The idea for a new tram or light rail system for the city of Dublin was first suggested in 1994, by a Dublin Transportation Initiative (DTI) report which referenced the original Dublin tramways, once running over 60 kilometres (37 mi) and reaching most parts of the city.
