Having more than 35 thousand people, Sighisoara, Schaässburg in German and Segesvar in Hungarian, is located in the center of Romania on the banks of the Tarnava Mare River, 55km South of Targu Mures, 97km North-East of Sibiu and 121km North-West of Brasov.
Being one of the few inhabited medieval citadels in the Southwest of Europe, Sighisoara was founded in the 12th century. Staring with the second half of the 12th century the Germans, helped by the Hungarian kings, colonized the southern region of Transylvania. In 1298, the Dominican monks built here a monastery called Schespurch (Schassburg). In the 15th century the town is fortified, the defense walls and towers being built.
Architectural, Sighisoara is a town of the Gothic style blended with the Renaissance and Baroque styles.
The citadel, being an outstanding testimony to the culture of the Transylvanian Saxons and a fine example of a small, fortified medieval town, is part of the UNESCO world heritage.
In the picture you can see the Clock Tower, a real symbol of the citadel.
Here you can read more about Sighisoara.
