Photographer's Note

These children live in the caves below the famous Buddhas of Bamiyan. In all there were four children, the eldest being the girl with the green headscarf and the youngest a mere baby. There were no adults to be seen, presumably they were working in the fields.

The young girl showed us her deformed finger and her torn clothes and worn out shoes. I don't think there was much that could be done locally to help with her hand but I left her a little money so she might replace her footwear.

Two donkeys stood in the shadow in front of the cave they call home. The children sat and stood nearby with dung all around. A pitiful existence.

There are many unfortunate people in Afghanistan and these children seem less fortunate than most. I can only hope the future holds something better for them.
