Photographer's Note
No 2 in my Houtong series (click on 'Houtong' theme on the left to see the other one).
Taken in the same area of central Beijing and on the same day as No. 1. This was taken from just inside a rather ornate doorway to the houtong, I just went inside and took this single photo.

Tech notes: 24mm lens and B&W film. There's something satisfying about walking around with a film camera with B&W film loaded. Scan from negative. Small amount of cropping off the bottom.

I was thinking of cloning out the space alien shaped antenna on the top right, but I didn't in the end. What do you think?

I really like the footprints in the snow - we can see that lots of people have passed by, but now there is nobody to be seen. Again, good use of B/W. Nice perspective, down the lane. This is a good series.

I think this is a great photo. It just takes you deep into this houtong, almost inviting you to walk in further. And the bicycles on each side add a great touch, because you know people are around, yet not seen. It would be interesting to come back and take a photo of the same area in the Spring or Fall.
