Photographer's Note
Mengayau rituals are the important cultural parts on Dayak believes in Kalimantan. They said, during war, by chop the enemy head off, they got the spiritual power and strenght mysticism.

What u see its a real human skull. This picture show Dayak performed one of the most sacred ritual, "Ntokong". To performed this ceremony, they must carried out the human skull from their house and other old stuff. Their ancestor fought and win the battle by choped few enemy heads. Its not a fake skull, believes me.

That's a really TE shot (and so much more valuable than sunsets, macros, lonely trees or kittys...) I would give you 50 points just for that...
I already know Sarawak and Sabah but I wish I could go to Kalimantan one of these days.
Your shot reminds me some of the recent Philip Blenkinsop's images about Dayaks chopping heads of Madurese people in 1999.
I wish the skull in the foreground was a bit more proeminent and easy to read : at first look i didn't see it : could you expand on when it was taken, was it a real ceremony, a true skull, etc.
I know Indonesian govt doesn't like very much the Dayaks and all sorts of Ibans, Kenyahs, etc., hence their ceremonies.
I hope the Dayaks will still live on their culture for a long time and that nobody more interested to timber than people living will chase them from their land. But unfortunately I think I already know the score...

I would love to see more photos like this on TE. I like the low angle you have taken this from enabling us to see the head and the standing people. I agree it would be good to see more of the skull. I hope you have more like this.

Great shot but scary too. It really looks like a real skull and these guys look serious about it too. I like (on a photograhic point of view) and dislike (on a human point of view) the red piece of cloth they are wearing - color of blood.
I like the tilted format and the grain on the image that makes it look like an old photo.

I like the diagonal cropping you've made. The angle of view is just perfect, and suit very well the scene. Interesting note. I like the global tones of colors - out from reality but very "journalistic" (as printed on a journal of not so good quality). "Alive and kicking shot!" :-)

Really like the point of view, the tilt and the compsotition of this photo. If it had been in black&white or sepia too, I might have believed that it was a shot form the 1800s taken by europeen that were trying to document for those that was at home about "strange and unknown" civilization. Even the quality and scene is bringing the same sence. Like it... and guess that they have used the same skull for a long time now. At least I hope they don't got a new one for every year...

I have just found this from a link provided by LUKO . This is probabley your most TE relevent picture posted to date, and I for one would like to know more.
The content of the picture is suberb and all the better for being real rather than tourist photo op.The low angle works well,
techincally it is a shame the sky has burnt out so badly lossing some details of head dresses and taking or eye away from the main object of this pic.
Thank you for sharing

I really love to see of this kind of photo journalism images here on TE. The angle close to ground that you choose is perfect. The dark colors are a perfect shot. Impressive and strong subject

This is very well-done, both interesting and scary at the same time. I like the slanted perspective and low camera angle. A very journalistic shot. I could imagine it in National Geographic if it were a little sharper.
Thanks for sharing!
