In 1253, a Royal Charter was given to hold
Scarborough Fayre. It was not a fair as we know it
today but a huge forty five day trading event, which was especially long for a fair in those days, that drew people from all over England and even the continent to do their business. As part of the proceedings, the fair also attracted jugglers and jesters and the like for what must have been a very lively and special event.

The English folk song dates back to those medieval times which became internationally famous when Simon & Garfunkel released the song in 1966.

Last year was the 750th anniversary of Scarborough Fayre and Town Centre Management felt that it was time to re-launch Scarborough Fayre and restore part of not only Scarborough’s heritage but England’s too.

The weeks events (Monday 26th July to
Sunday 1st August) revolved around its medieval history with jugglers and jesters but also with a ‘continental market’ that truly represented its trading and continental heritage. Approximately 30
to 35 stalls was there, in the town centre.

Stalls on the market included: Cheese from France and Holland, Olives from France and Spain, Soaps and Lavenders from France, Charcuterie from France, Hand made Belgian Chocolates, Dried Meat Sausages from France and Spain, Vegetables and Fruit from France and Spain, Wine from France and Spain, Cider and Calvados from France, Glass and Basket ware from Spain and Vietnam, Soups and Delicacies, Biscuits and Cakes from Normanday and Brittany, the only mobile boulangerie in the UK, Plants from Holland, Excellent Jewellery from around the World, Crepes, Mustards and Jams, Herbs and Spices from France and Morocco, Sweetmeats from Morocco, Italian Leather, Garlic from Spain and France, African Art and Wooden Flowers...
