In 1789 the US Government created the Lighthouse Service and by 1819 it had established the first lighthouse on Lake Erie. In 1841 the US started a survey of the Great Lakes to produce accurate navigation charts. By the beginning XX century the Lighthouse Board oversaw 334 major lights, 67 fog signals and 563 buoys on the Great Lakes. Lighthouses now have a historical value to the surrounding Great Lakes, most are owned and operated by Historical Societies as museums.
