After yesterday´s two Space Shuttles
now their "home" - the place in which they are before
and after their flight into space.
This is the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB)
and it was originally built for assembly of
Apollo/Saturn vehicles and was later modified to
support Space Shuttle operations. High Bays 1 and 3
are used for integration and stacking of the complete
Space Shuttle vehicle. High Bay 2 is used for external
tank (ET) checkout and storage and as a contingency
storage area for orbiters. High Bay 4 is also used for
ET checkout and storage, as well as for payload
canister operations and solid rocket boster (SRB)
contingency handling.
I guess you could fit the Cologne Cathedral into it:
The VAB covers 3.25 hectares. It is 160 meters tall,
218 meters long and 158 meters wide. It encloses
3,664,883 cubic meters of space.
The US-flag on the side was added in 1976 and is
64 x 33.5m in size; the red and white stripes are each
3m wide and the part with the stars has about the
size of a basketball court.
A second pov can be seen n the WS-section.
Unfortunately this was taken against the light out of
the tour-bus, so there a some slight reflections.
